It’s an election winning period for Nigerians in Diaspora as US based Nigerian Zulfat Suara has been elected into Nashville city government.
Suara who holds the record of been the first Muslim to be elected into the Nashville city government had about 2000 votes ahead of another council member Sheri Weiner who is contesting for Bellevue area.
Despite the islamophobic comments that she got based on her religion she still got a lot of support from people from people of different Faith. This is said to reflect the city’s diversity.
During her campaign, Suara who was very optimistic focused on finance related issues and public education and said even if she doesn’t win, she will still continue in her activism.
The certified accountant who came into the US in 1993 when her husband was offered a fellowship at Vanderbilt University in Nashville was able to start an accounting firm in 1998. She however currently works at Meharry Medical College as the school’s Assistant Controller.
